Your Pet Passport Stopped Working on 22 April 2026
GB residents now need an Animal Health Certificate for dogs, cats and ferrets travelling into the EU, and the five-pet limit now applies per private vehicle.

Owners resident in Great Britain need an Animal Health Certificate for each trip into the EU. A pet passport issued in Great Britain no longer works at the border, whatever its issue date. GOV.UK advises owners to get a certificate for each trip, and it is the certificate your vet has to sign rather than one you can apply for yourself.
Non-commercial travel into the EU is capped at five pets per private vehicle rather than five per person. A family who once split their animals between two adults in one car can no longer do that. The limit for people travelling on foot has not changed.
Get the documents or route wrong and your pet can be refused at the border, so both need checking before travel.

Whether a border crossing is legal depends on who is carrying the animal, not only on what paperwork it holds. Our approvals cover DEFRA, EU Type 2 transporter authorisation for long distance journeys in Europe, and IATA rules on flights. Professional pet relocation services need all three, because a road move, a ferry crossing and a flight are each governed separately. You can read how our approvals are held and checked in full.
Not all of them. Only carriers and routes approved by the Animal and Plant Health Agency can bring a cat, dog or ferret into England or Scotland, and there are currently no approved routes into Wales at all. Arrivals from Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are the exception. The approved list changes and was last updated on 18 August 2026, which is one of the commoner ways a self-booked crossing falls apart before the journey has even started.
Yes, within limits. European Commission rules treat a journey as a non-commercial movement only when the owner travels within five days either side of the pet, and the carrier holds written authorisation from the owner. Outside that window the animal has to meet the entry conditions for commercial movements instead, which is a slower and more demanding process.
The certificate itself makes room for this. It allows a person nominated by a carrier the owner has contracted to make the movement on their behalf, and the Official Veterinarian must see and copy that authorisation letter. That vet also has to hold Official Veterinarian status, and many practices do not.
Approvals settle whether a journey is allowed. They do not settle whether it suits the animal, and some pets need more thought than others.

The cheapest available flight is irrelevant if the airline will not carry the animal safely.
What Shapes the Price of Your Pet's Journey
There is no useful flat rate for pet travel. The number changes with the route, the animal, how you travel, the paperwork and how much time there is to arrange it.
These are third-party industry figures, not Tailored Pet Travel prices. They are useful as context before comparing what different quotes actually include.
One firm's number may cover transport only. Another may include the certificate, crate, customs and airport handling. The cheaper quote is often simply the shorter one, so compare what is included before comparing the total.

Paperwork and Vet Work
We arrange the timing around a vet who can sign. A microchip fitted after the rabies jab invalidates that vaccination, and an Animal Health Certificate cannot be signed until 21 full days have passed after the jab.
The dates are watched as closely as the documents.
Collection and Delivery
A trained handler collects from your door, stays responsible for your pet through the journey and hands over in person at the other end.
Door to door means the journey ends with a person, not a depot.
How far in advance should I book?

Live GPS tracking runs for the whole journey, and you can reach the handler carrying your animal directly rather than a call centre.
Handlers are trained to work with animals, not general drivers hired to cover a route. On flights into the UK, our work with the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre means the arrival checks are dealt with before your pet reaches your door.

Six practical answers owners usually want before they hand a pet over.
Is my pet too old or too young to travel?
No pet may enter the UK below 15 weeks of age, which is the 12 week minimum for a rabies vaccination plus the 21 day wait afterwards. There is no upper age limit in law, but airlines set their own rules, and an older animal is often better suited to a road and ferry route than a flight. Both get checked before we quote.
Do dogs need tapeworm treatment coming back to the UK?
Yes. Dogs returning to Great Britain need tapeworm treatment recorded between 24 and 120 hours before they enter. Cats and ferrets are exempt. The window is exact, and a dog treated too early or too late will be stopped at the border.
What if my pet has a medical condition?
Tell us at the enquiry stage. Medication schedules, mobility and anxiety all change the route we recommend, and a road and ferry crossing is often gentler than a flight for an animal that struggles. The journey gets planned around the pet rather than the pet fitted to a standard route.
Can you move my pet if I have already gone abroad?
Often, yes, though the answer turns on when you travelled. The five day rule decides whether the move counts as non-commercial or commercial, and that changes which documents are needed. Send us your own travel dates and you will get a straight answer on which route applies.
What happens if my dates move?
Vet appointments and certificates are timed to your travel date, so a change usually means rebooking rather than starting again. That is manageable when we hear early. A signed certificate has a fixed life, which is exactly why we do not book it far ahead.
Do you move anything other than dogs and cats?
Yes. Small animals travel regularly, and each species has its own entry rules by destination. Send the species and the country and you will get confirmation of what is possible before you commit to a date.
