Common situations

Does your situation sound like one of these?

Six come up again and again. Open the one that matches yours.

Refused at check in

The airline or the border officer has looked at the documents and said no. The flight has gone and your pet has not. These are the most common reasons a pet is turned away at check in.

Flight cancelled or missed

A delay, a heat embargo or a failed connection has left a booked journey with no aircraft.

Paperwork rejected

A date is wrong, a stamp is missing, or the certificate has run past its ten days. Here is what happens when paperwork is rejected at the border.

The move has been brought forward

A job start, a house completion or a visa date has shifted and your pet no longer fits the plan.

You cannot travel yourself

Illness, a bereavement or a work emergency means somebody else has to get your pet there. If you are ringing on behalf of the owner, written permission from them is needed before the animal can leave the country, and we will tell you what it has to say.

A pet stranded abroad

The animal is in another country and the person who was bringing it home cannot.

Feasibility

What can still be fixed, and what cannot?

Most short notice problems are scheduling problems, and scheduling problems can be solved. The rabies clock is the exception.

Fixable in hours or days

Five common problems

A missing or rejected animal health certificate

As long as the rabies vaccination is valid, a new certificate can usually be arranged quickly, because we work with Official Veterinarians rather than sending you to ring round practices yourself. It has to be issued face to face, since the vet must scan the microchip and watch you sign the declaration, so it cannot be posted or emailed. Remember the certificate only covers ten days for entry into the EU, counted from the day it is issued.

The wrong crate

Airline approved crate hire solves this in one visit.

A failed flight

For most European destinations a Channel crossing by Eurotunnel or ferry can replace the aircraft entirely, and often lands your pet home sooner.

A flight stopped by heat

Airlines suspend pet cargo when ground temperature at departure, arrival or any stop along the way passes roughly 29C, and snub-nosed breeds face tighter limits still. These embargoes come and go with little notice, so a confirmed flight can vanish overnight. For European journeys a road crossing solves it, because a van has no temperature threshold. Watch the certificate though, since a flight pushed back far enough runs past its ten days and the paperwork has to be done again.

Border paperwork that has been queried

A query is not a refusal. Most are resolved with the correct wording and the right supporting document.

Cannot be fixed at any price

Three hard blockers

A pet with no rabies vaccination

GOV.UK requires at least 21 full days to pass after the first dose before travel to the EU. Some vaccines take longer, and the government's own worked example uses one that takes 30 days.

A lapsed booster

If cover has broken, the full wait starts again. This is the most common reason a pet the owner believes is fully vaccinated cannot leave this week.

A tapeworm dose given outside the window

Dogs entering Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland and Norway need treatment between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. Dosing too early fails as surely as forgetting.

Nobody enjoys hearing the second list. Hearing it in the first hour is a great deal better than hearing it at the desk.

Timeframes

How fast can a pet move?

Within the UK, same day collection is possible if a vehicle and handler are free. To Europe by road, 24 to 72 hours is realistic once the documents are in hand. Flights are slower than most people expect.

Within the UK

Same day

Subject to availability. A dedicated vehicle and a trained pet handler, collected from your door and delivered to the destination.

UK to Europe by road

24 to 72 hours

Eurotunnel or a ferry crossing, with every document checked before the van leaves your drive. These run alongside our regular Channel crossings.

Flights into the UK

72 hours minimum

Heathrow Animal Reception Centre asks for all documentation at least 72 hours before the aircraft departs. Through the summer, heat embargoes can also pull a confirmed flight at short notice. For European journeys the road is usually quicker than the air.

Outside the EU

Destinations outside the EU are the slowest at the moment. They need an export health certificate rather than an animal health certificate, and availability for those has tightened since the 2026 rule changes, so allow more time.

Worth knowing

Operators who run a scheduled timetable can only offer you their next departure, which may be a fortnight away no matter how urgent your situation is. Short notice needs a vehicle assigned to your pet alone.

The first hour

What happens in the first hour?

Four steps, from the moment you pick up the phone to the moment your pet is collected.

Same-day London pet transport collection with relaxed dog and travel belongings

Urgent pet collection

Step 01

You call or message

Any hour. A person picks up, not a form.

Step 02

We check four dates

Microchip, rabies vaccination, booster history and certificate issue date. Those four decide almost everything. The certificate itself is quick to produce. Finding a vet who is free to produce it is the part that stops most people, which is why we go to our own Official Veterinarians rather than starting from scratch.

Step 03

You get a yes or a no

Straight, with the reason behind it. If the journey cannot happen this week, you will be told the earliest date it can.

Step 04

We move

Vehicle assigned, crossing booked, vet appointment arranged, live tracking from the moment your pet is collected.

Cost

What does short notice cost?

Short notice work costs more than a planned journey. How much more depends on distance, timing, and how much of the paperwork is still outstanding.

What moves the number

Distance and route, and whether a crossing has to be booked at short notice

Whether a handler and vehicle have to be pulled off other work

Your pet's size, and how many animals are travelling

How much documentation still needs to be produced

Whether an overnight stop or a night of boarding is needed

Vet paperwork, published rates

£99 to £180

A standard animal health certificate, across UK Official Veterinarian providers.

£149 to £199

Typical urgent rates, booked with less than seven days notice.

Not every vet can issue an animal health certificate, because it needs a separate DEFRA authorisation on top of normal registration, and many general practices ask for several weeks of notice. Those are sector figures rather than ours, and you will pay the vet directly. Read more on animal health certificate requirements.

Your transport is quoted per journey, once the route and the timing are known.

Why do owners ring when a plan collapses?

You get an answer before you get a price

Most quotes tell you what a journey costs. What you need first is whether the journey is possible at all, and with Tailored Pet Travel that comes first.

A person answers at three in the morning

Border problems do not keep office hours. Neither does the phone.

Your pet gets its own vehicle

No shared run, no waiting for the next scheduled departure, and no strangers' animals in the back.

Road, tunnel, ferry and air on one desk

When a flight fails, the alternative is assessed in the same conversation instead of being handed to a second company. Planned journeys work the same way, through our planned international relocations service.

Can I still use my pet passport?

Not if you live in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK advises that a pet passport should not be used from Great Britain even when it was issued in an EU country, and that a pet travelling on one may be refused entry. An animal health certificate is needed instead. This one catches out owners who have used the same passport without any trouble for years.

Can you get an animal health certificate the same day?

Sometimes, and it depends on two things. The rabies vaccination has to already be valid, and an Official Veterinarian has to be free. We go to vets we work with regularly rather than starting a search, which is usually what makes the difference on a same day request. The certificate must still be issued in person, because the vet has to scan the microchip and witness you signing the declaration.

Can a pet fly into the UK at short notice?

Rarely inside 72 hours. Heathrow Animal Reception Centre asks for all documentation to be submitted at least 72 hours before the aircraft departs. From Europe, a road crossing by Eurotunnel or ferry is usually faster and keeps your pet out of an aircraft hold altogether.

Is it safe to move a pet this quickly?

Yes, when the journey is built around the animal rather than the clock. Climate controlled vehicles, planned rest stops and a trained pet handler matter more at short notice, not less. One thing to be straight about: on a planned move the crate is usually delivered weeks ahead so the pet can get used to it, and at short notice there is no time for that. We work around it by settling the animal in at collection rather than at a terminal, and by using bedding that already smells of home. If a pet is not fit to travel, you will be told so.

What if my pet has already been refused once?

That is one of the most common reasons people ring. A refusal almost always points at one specific document or date, and once that is identified the journey can usually be rebuilt for a new departure. Bring the refusal notice or the officer's exact wording to the call, because it is the quickest way to find the problem.
