What Is a Pet Passport and Does Your Pet Need One?
A pet passport is an official document that proves your pet meets the health and entry requirements for travel. While the UK no longer issues EU pet passports, pets travelling abroad still require the right paperwork to avoid quarantine, delays, or denied entry.

What Documents Do Pets Need to Travel?
Since January 2021, UK-issued pet passports are no longer valid for travel to the EU and many other destinations. However, pets still need official paperwork before they can travel. The required documents may include:
Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
For travel to the EU and Northern Ireland, pets need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued by a DEFRA-approved vet within 10 days of travel. It proves your pet is microchipped and vaccinated against rabies.
Export Health Certificates (EHCs)
For travel outside the EU, pets often require an Export Health Certificate (EHC), which varies depending on the destination country. These are issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV) and confirm that your pet meets that country’s entry requirements.
Microchip Certification
A microchip is a legal requirement for pet travel. It must be implanted before your pet’s rabies vaccination and recorded in official documents.
Rabies Vaccination Certificate
A rabies vaccination is mandatory for most international pet travel. Some countries require a rabies titre test (blood test) to confirm immunity.
Tapeworm Treatment (For Certain Destinations)
If travelling to Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta, or Norway, dogs must be treated for Echinococcus tapeworm between 24 and 120 hours before arrival.
Import Permits & Additional Paperwork
Some destinations, such as Australia, New Zealand, and the UAE, require additional import permits, quarantine bookings, and vet checks before travel.
